Why do we celebrate these women?
In the late 1800s women rode in skirts – side saddle jumping, bronc and trick riding, and roping steers. Rodeo was one of the first professional sports in the United States in which women competed against men. These women were trend setters and rule breakers, daring to change their lives and pave the way for independent women to follow. Though they weren’t allowed to vote (or even wear pants) they found their voice, competing with and doing the work of men in the rodeo arena.
Their stories are astounding.
Some left home as young teens to compete, others ran away from convents, while others left unhappy marriages and stifling roles. Most of these inspiring icons continued riding with serious injuries, and some died, competing in the world they loved most.
Discover their spirit in every Legacy vintage cowgirl product.
